Fused Deposition Modeling was the first of the 3D printing technologies to offer true engineering-grade plastic materials. It has this material advantage because it extrudes plastic filament from a pre-loaded cartridge from a moving nozzle and onto to the build platform. The process is performed layer by layer. This additive technology offers incredible part strength and real-world functionality but lacks in the surface quality arena due to the nature of the layer process.
